Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, is pleased to announce that it and Industrial Development Corporation Limited have completed preparations for the launch of Zambia’s National Carrier (IDC). Both Ethiopian Airlines and Industrial Development Corporation Limited (IDC) have a 45 percent stake in the joint venture, which has contributed USD30 million to the airline’s establishment.

Beginning with a flight from Lusaka to Ndola on December 1st, 2021, Zambia Airways (ZN) will fly six times a week to Ndola, and a further five times a week to Livingstone, as part of African Sky. Mfuwe and Solwezi will be added to the network in the first quarter of 2022, followed by regional destinations such as Johannesburg and Harare.

To quote the airline’s CEO, Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2025 multiple hub strategy in Africa includes the strategic equity partnership in the launch of Zambia’s national carrier.” To support its growth strategy in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with African carriers, and the new Zambia Airways will serve as a strong hub in Central and Southern Africa that provides domestic, regional, and eventually international air connectivity, which will enhance socioeconomic integration and tourism in Zambia as well as its neighbouring countries.

A multi-hub strategy for Ethiopian Airlines in Africa has resulted in hubs in Lomé, Togo, with ASKY Airlines, Lilongwe, Malawi, N’Djamena, Chad, and Maputo, Mozambique, all with Ethiopian Airlines. Ethiopian also owns national carriers of Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
